Standard cover

Our retail insurance policy covers the following as standard:

Business contents - Our policy covers your trade contents and stock, all you need to do is inform us of the value of the sums insured. This will cover you against a wide range of perils including explosion, fire, storm damage, malicious damage and theft involving forcible and violent entry or exit from the premises.

Business interruption - This helps you stay in business by covering loss of gross profit and reasonable expenditure incurred as a result of a loss covered under Section 1 of the policy. A gross profit sum insured of £500,000 with an indemnity period of 12 months is our standard cover.

Loss of accounts receivable - Covers money up to a maximum limit of £25,000 that customers owe your business, but cannot be collected, due to a loss covered under Section 1 of the policy to your books of account or business records.

Loss of liquor license - If for any reason you lose your liquor licence due to circumstances outside of your control then we will cover you up to £100,000 against loss of profit or the depreciation in the value of your property should it be sold.

Public and Products Liability - Provides cover of up to £2,000,000 for sums you become legally liable to pay in respect of accidental injury to any person who is not an employee or accidental loss or damage to their material property happening in the course of your business or caused by the nature or condition of anything sold or supplied by your business.

Employer's liability - Provides cover of up to £10,000,000 for sums you become legally liable to pay as damages, together with your legal costs and expenses relating to an injury to an employee for which you are legally liable.

Standard policy benefits

Our retail insurance cover automatically includes the following extensions as standard.

Personal accident - Assault resulting in bodily injury to you or an employee caused solely or directly as a result of robbery or any attempted robbery in course of the business. Weekly benefit for disablement - £100 per week up to 104 weeks. £10,000 for death, loss of limb(s) or sight
Loss of freezer contents following accidental change in temperature. £2,000
Loss or damage to equipment the property of the National Lottery operator Up to the amount nominated by you within the contents sum insured.
Seasonal increase - Automatic increase in stock sum insured during busy periods. Up to 25%
Outside catering - cover against injury to the public and damage to their property including damage to your equipment as a result of an insured peril. Limit for equipment £2,000
Damage to property at exhibitions held in the United Kingdom as a result of an insured peril. £2,000

Optional extras

You can also select a range of optional extras to add on to your retail insurance policy, for an additional premium:

Buildings - It is possible to extend your contents cover to include your business premises and also include subsidence.

Subsidence - This provides cover for damage to your premises as a result of subsidence, ground heave or landslip.

Theft by employees - Covers against a direct loss as a result of fraud or dishonesty involving the theft of money or contents by any employee up to the value of £5,000 in any one policy period.

All risks specified items - Provides cover throughout the UK for identified specified items that will be used away from your business premises and for up to 30 consecutive days elsewhere in the world.

Commercial Legal Protection - This covers legal expenses which may arise in any number of different circumstances.

Terrorism - Covers you against damage to your property from the effect of acts of terrorism up to the maximum sums insured of Section 1 - Contents and Section 5 - Buildings.

Computer breakdown - Provides cover for loss or damage caused by computer breakdown or failure up to the value specified by you. Cover also extends to include:

  • Loss or damage to computer records up to a limit of £5,000 in any one policy period.
  • Additional expenditure arising from the breakdown of computer equipment up to £10,000 in any one policy period.
  • Reinstatement of data up to £5,000 in any one policy period.

 

Commercial legal protection

Commercial Legal Protection is an optional extra which will cover your legal expenses in certain circumstances as explained in the Policy Document. Our Commercial Legal Protection cover is underwritten by DAS Legal Expenses Insurance Company Limited who are not part of the Allianz group of companies.

Commercial Legal Protection cover has the following features and benefits:

  • Employment disputes and compensation awards.
  • Legal defence.
  • Property protection and physical injury.
  • VAT disputes and Tax investigations.
  • Maximum limit of £100,000 for any one claim for Employment Compensation Awards.
  • Maximum limit of £1,000,000 in any one period of insurance for Employment Compensation Awards.

Significant Exclusions or Limitations for Commercial Legal Protection include:

  • Employment dispute where the cause of action arises within the first 90 days of the indemnity provided by this section of the policy.
  • Dispute with an employee who was subject to a written or oral warning (formal or informal) within 180 days immediately preceding the inception date of the indemnity provided by this section of the policy if the Date of Occurrence was within the first 180 days of the indemnity provided by this section of the policy.
  • Redundancy or alleged redundancy or unfair selection for redundancy arising within the first 180 days of the indemnity provided by this section of the policy.

Exclusions & limitations

These are some of the exclusions that apply to the policy. There are also further provisions such as those relating to security requirements, alarms and under insurance, as well as general conditions and exclusions. Details of these can be found in the policy document. Other additional terms and conditions may be applied in certain cases. Excesses apply to certain types of claims.

External blinds and signs - cover excludes neon signs. See Section 1, extension 2 of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.

Stock in any cellar - or basement to be placed on racks at least 150mm above floor level - see Section 1 of the Policy Document - Contents of the Shop, item A2 and A3, for terms and conditions.

Goods in transit - Goods in Transit (Security) - if vehicle is left unattended it must be locked at all points of access and in addition it must be garaged in enclosed premises which are securely locked or have a watchman in constant attendance between the hours of 9pm and 6am. See Section 1, extension 3 of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.

Money on Premises - Money left unattended and not contained in a locked safe will be limited to £500. See Section 1, extension 5 of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.

  • Money cover does not extend to include money in any Automated Teller Machine unless specifically agreed by us and endorsed in your policy. Increased levels of security may be required.

Transition Condition - is a condition precedent to liability that whenever money in transit exceeds £2,500 at any one time:

  • a. the money must be accompanied by not less than two responsible adult persons.
  • b. not more than £2,500 will be carried by any one person.

Personal Accident - Assault - Age limits of 16 to 70 apply. Compensation for death, loss of limb or sight only applies if they occur within two years of sustaining the bodily injury. See Section 1, extension 6 of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.

Business Interruption - Loss of gross profit to your business following the failure of the public supply of electricity, gas, water or telecommunications is limited to interruption caused by destruction or damage occurring at the premises of the supplier. See Section 2, extension 4 of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.

Unoccupancy - We must be notified immediately if any Shop becomes unoccupied and a suitable extra premium paid if required. See Section 1, clause H of the Policy Document for terms and conditions. Minimum standards of security apply. Theft and theft of money is excluded unless the security requirements are fully complied with - please see General Condition 6 of the Policy Document for terms and conditions and, if indicated in the Schedule, Special Clause 1 for details of our alarm requirements.

Asbestos Exclusion - Only applicable to Public and Products Liability We will not be liable for legal liability in respect of injury, loss or damage directly or indirectly caused by arising from in consequence of or in any way involving asbestos. Provided that this exclusion shall not apply to liability for injury, or loss of or damage caused by any commodity, article or thing containing asbestos where the presence of asbestos is not in itself a direct or indirect cause of such injury or loss or damage. See Section 3D exclusion m) of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.

Public Liability - Cover excludes work away from the premises other than collection, delivery and outside catering. See Section 3D exclusion h) of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.

Products Liability - Cover excludes injury or loss or damage to property caused by or in connection with goods sold or supplied by you to the United States of America or Canada. See Section 3D exclusion I) of the Policy Document for terms and conditions.
