Whitbread enjoys 'excellent progress'

Whitbread has announced its pre-tax profits have risen by 26.3 per cent to £210.3 million for the financial year up to February.

The like-for-like sales of the company also increased by 5.7 per cent over the course of last year.

Alan Parker, chief executive of Whitbread, said: "2007-8 was a year of excellent progress with good results across the Company. Whitbread is now a more resilient business with strong growth prospects in the UK and overseas."

He added that the in anticipation of a "more challenging environment" action has been taken by the company in order to simplify processes and "reduce costs".

The pub restaurants of the group enjoyed good years, delivering an approximate increase in profits of 40 per cent each.

Mr Parker concluded that Whitbread is "well placed for the future".

Whitbread is the largest hotel and restaurant group in the UK and employs around 33,000 people.
