Volkswagen has announced that it has set a new record for the number of commercial vehicles it sold in the first nine months of the year.

During this period, the manufacturer sold 356,000 vehicles, compared with 319,650 during the corresponding nine months in 2006.

Meanwhile, registrations of the company's light commercial vehicles in the UK increased by 12.7 per cent.

Commenting on the figures, Stephen Schaller, chief executive officer of Volkswagon Commercial Vehicles, said: "The strong demand in the summer months delivered additional volume rather than purchases that have been brought forward."

The firm has an "optimistic" outlook for the rest of the year, he added.

Last month, the manufacturer launched its new Caddy Maxi van at the European Road Transport Show in Amsterdam.

In total, Volkswagon Commercial vehicles had 22 models on display, including the gas-powered Caddy EcoFuel and the Caddy BlueMotion - both of which it claims to be "environmental initiatives".
