Restaurant insurance owners are being warned that the cost of removing vermin may be outside of the coverage their policies provide.

Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, claims infestation may cause a variety of costs and, if caused negligently, owners could be required to foot the bill themselves.

He states leaving buildings unoccupied could be one of the main factors leading to them developing vermin.

It is important for businesses to ensure there is no food left during an evacuation if this is to be avoided, those with restaurant insurance may be interested to discover.

Mr Staddon states: "If [rodents] come in they can start chewing up wires and that damage may not be covered under an insurance contract."

In other news, Malcolm Tarling, media relations officer at the Association of British Insurers, has recommended those looking for business insurance make their decision based on the type of policy rather than the price.ADNFCR-873-ID-19009529-ADNFCR
