A positive relationship with small firms has helped communications firm Unicom to grow its own commercial operation, according to one of its directors.

The comments follow an announcement that the Manchester-based company, which currently employs around 500 people, is to create 300 new jobs, reports the Light Reading website.

Chris Earle, the company's operations director, told the site that Unicom has "a great affinity" with the small business community and that its expansion is due to "no-nonsense personal service, priced highly competitively and operated from a local base".

Earlier this year, the firm said that although the "vast majority" of small businesses have "binned their paper mountain", many are risking losing their data by not backing it up.

Speaking at the time, Mr Earle said: "All it takes is a power surge, a hardware failure, a software glitch, a break-in or even a wrong click of a mouse and every single piece of information relating to accounts, tax, personnel, sales, customers and stock can be lost for good."
