A new study has suggested that the UK tourism and hospitality industry could be worth over £20 billion more than official estimates.

According to the British Hospitality Association's (BHA) annual Trends and Statistics report investment in the sector is exceptionally high and that an estimated £3 billion has been put into UK tourism between August 2006 and 2007.

BHA chief executive Bob Cotton said that it was clear that the sector was in good health and although this should be welcomed there were still "challenges ahead".

"There has never been a time when there has been more investment in the UK hospitality industry, but we must make ever greater efforts to promote the UK as a domestic holiday destination," he said.

The report picked out cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle-on-Tyne and Edinburgh that had seen good investment as well as London.

However business in resort areas was reportedly slow and Brighton was the only major exception to this trend.
