The UK government must follow the example of the Scottish parliament when it comes to treatment of SMEs, one expert has claimed.

Data released by Equifax's latest Business Failures Report revealed that, when compared to the same time last year, there was a 23.8 per cent fall in the number of firms that went bust in Scotland in the first quarter of 2008.

Jim Gorie, the Forum of Private Business's (FPB) spokesperson for Scotland, explained there are some key differences which has allowed business to flourish north of the boarder.

He said: "The leaders of all the four major parties all have business experience and the present SNP Enterprise Minister was formerly a highly successful entrepreneur in the computer business.

"Safeguarding the future survival of small businesses in Scotland will not be linked to high flying political economic theory, but nitty gritty support at constituency level."

According to Mr Gorrie, just nine per cent of politicians in the UK have more than ten years of business experience.

Last week, the FPB claimed that moves to abolish tax incentives relating to biofuels will only serve to alienate small firms.
