One in five UK employers has turned to overseas workers to plug a skills gap, new research shows.

The Borderless Workforce study, carried out by Manpower, reveals that employers in the UK have used foreign workers to fill a variety of roles, from labourers to finance professionals.

Mark Cahill, managing director of Manpower UK, believes that demand for overseas workers will grow as the country's aging workforce exacerbates the skills shortage.

He said: "The UK has a widely recognised skills shortage which many employers are struggling with. By being open-minded about how this can be addressed - including looking to overseas talent - many employers are able to meet these challenges."

The survey also reveals that the UK is the second most popular location for people to relocate to for work, with the USA in the number one spot.

Recently, a report by the Work Foundation claimed that managers in the UK will have to attract highly-skilled workers from abroad if they are to succeed in the world of "knowledge intensive" industries.
