UK entrepreneurs are keen to do their bit for the environment but feel that their efforts are unsupported by government, research for think tank Tenon Forum has found.

Almost half said that their attempts to keep their businesses green were not helped by government, with most saying that tax credits would incentivise environmental policy.

More than four fifths of small employers say that they have an energy-efficiency policy, three quarters said that they recycle paper and a quarter promote car-pooling schemes.

One in ten said that they have had their carbon footprint measured in an effort to target potential reductions in emissions.

"UK entrepreneurs are sending out a clear message to government," said Andy Raynor of Tenon.

"While most support implementing policies that reduce their environmental impact, they also cannot do so alone.

"Small and medium sized enterprises need government to motivate and reward best environmental practices with tax credits so that green behaviour also makes a genuine difference to their bottom line."
