Small retailers could be able to boost sales by ensuring that staff members are properly trained, it has been claimed.
According to staff trainer Lisa Titcomb and retail director Liz Bennett of Lush, providing people with good quality training can make them feel motivated.
This, combined with a desire to do well will lead to good sales, the experts stated.
"It can also result in better staff retention - if they feel valued, appreciated and invested in then they will want to stay," the said.
However, bad training can have the opposite affect, demoralising staff and possibly even damage the firm's image, the pair warned.
The 2007 National Employer Skills survey found that 37 per cent of employees in England received no training at all over the 12-month period the study looked at.
However, it also found that 48 per cent of firms have a training plan and 35 per cent have a budget allocated to the activity.
