A new report published by Kent County Council and Transport for London has indicated that hosting the Tour de France was a success, helping to boost the local economy.

The study, undertaken by the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University, found that hosting the stage of the race generated 95,000 hotel nights in Kent, Kentnews.co.uk reports.

According to the news provider, the research discovered that for every £1 invested to bring the event to the UK generated a return of £9.

Councillor Roger Gough, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "This is yet more evidence of what an amazing impact the Tour had on Kent and London."

The council is "confident" that the race helped in "showcasing" the county and will bring more visitors in the future, he added.

Transport for London confirmed this week that it is currently in negotiations to bring the Tour back to the city before the 2012 Olympic Games.
