New research has revealed that, despite recent changes to the law, the majority of British small businesses have failed to put in procedures to enable their staff to continue working beyond the age of 65.
The study from Lloyds TSB Business and the SERTeam at the Open University found that just a quarter of SMEs had implemented the 'right to request' rules for employees.
Some 45 per cent of the SMEs questioned said they were unsure whether they would be bringing in the procedures, while 28 per cent said that they intended to.
Stephen Pegge, head of communications at Lloyds TSB Business, said: "Given their positive attitudes to the contribution made by older workers, it is surprising that so many small firms are still undecided about whether to allow their staff to work beyond 65.
"With skill shortages one of the biggest issues, it's vital that small firms make the most of the talent older employees have to offer and this may save them money in the long term. Planning ahead now could also avoid costly legal disputes in the future."
