Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) can be helped by the various government, banking and private services available, advises one expert.

Dr Tracey Marr, director of community enterprise for Business Boffins, said today that enterprises can expect increased levels of support with issues such as helping communities and the environment.

"There's always been support for small businesses; there are obviously organisations such as Business Link and other government schemes … so there's a lot of focus on [support]."

She also said that increasing numbers of SMEs were looking to the internet to start global business but that this was not an infallible medium.

"People can actually start businesses for themselves from home, reaching customers worldwide … but you've got to balance that with how many people check their emails every five minutes!"

Earlier this week Nigel Owen, a spokesperson for NatWest, said that SMEs would stand a better chance if they started off with good support.
