Pubs in Sunderland are taking part in a trial which sees glasses replaced by pint-sized polycarbonate containers, it has been revealed.
A number of on-trade premises in the city are taking part in the pilot which involves the use of the plastic receptacles which can be washed and used again for either hot or cold drinks.
The scheme is being run by the Safer Sunderland Partnership and has the backing if both police and the council.
Louise Hardy, Sunderland city centre manager, said: "It is a positive measure for those bars and clubs who want to get involved.
"One of the things of the pilot is that we are looking for feedback and that includes how the drink tastes."
If the trial proves a success, then the scheme will be rolled out across the rest of the city.
According to BBC news, the plastic glasses can survive being run over by a small vehicle.
Last week, the Morning Advertiser reported the findings of a study by Horizon which indicates food price inflation is starting to stabilise.
