With the smoking ban due to come into effect in English pubs in exactly one month, authorities will be able to detect people flouting the ban by the use of alarms, it has emerged.

The system is to be implemented in pubs across Burnley and Padiham, but may spread to other regions.

Hundreds of pubs have spent large amounts of money on provisions for the ban, such as outdoor smoking shelters.

However, it is anticipated that many people will still flout the ban by smoking indoors after the change in legislation comes into effect on July 1st.

Brent Dunleavey, who will demonstrate the alarms to licensees, said:"Our technology has been praised for its ability to cover areas that are difficult to monitor such as toilets and other hidden areas 100 per cent of the time," reports the Burnley Citizen.

The secretary of Padiham Pubwatch and licensee of The Railway, Julie Simcoe, said: "As licensees we fully understand that the smoking ban may be difficult for some of our customers who are used to having a cigarette whilst they are out socialising."
