SMEs which are considering allowing their staff to work from home should run a trail of the system, one expert has claimed.
Nesta Holden, campaigns and policy worker for the National Group on Homeworking, explained that while working from home can offer some benefits, it does not suit everyone.
She said: "It's good to give people the opportunity to do it on a trial basis because for some people, it doesn't suit them. It can be quite difficult to close the door on their work at the end of the day."
Ms Holden added that homeworking should be "a positive option" and not something that people should be forced in to if they did not feel it is suitable for them.
According to a recent report by the Chartered Institute of Personal Development, the main reason cited by firms for offering flexible working is that it helps with recruitment and retention.
