SMEs need to 'consider continental differences'

Expats setting up small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in France should be aware of the market differences, according to one expert.

A spokeswoman for Association Integration Kreizh Briezh (AIKB), said the prospect of setting up in central Brittany is attractive for some but entrepreneurs should be aware of differences in the system.

Elie Barbeau, office manager at AIKB, said that the quality of life and the familiar strands of Breton culture make the area a popular choice for expats.

"Many expats try to set up their own business and the problem is that they don't realise that the social charges are completely different from England," she said.

She added that popular businesses included setting up bed and breakfasts, chambres d'hote or camping sites.

"Many families come with their children and so with the French education system the children go into French classes and soon they . . . become the interpreter of the family."

Latest figures from the Institute for Public Policy Research show that there are currently some 200,000 British expats living in France on a permanent basis.
