Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should consider their current waste management practices and if necessary make changes, according to one expert.
A spokeswoman for Envirowise, a group which aims to encourage best practice in business that concern environmental issues, said this week that it was important for SMEs to address how to reduce the impact their waste can have.
Heather Cholerton, waste management expert at Envirowise said: "The minimum companies have to do now is to require their waste management company treat the waste for them."
She added that this involved paying for waste management but said that with some consideration businesses need not generate such high levels of waste in the first place.
"We are suggesting that people have a look at their waste and what they are producing as waste, what resources they are using and look at if they actually do have to produce all that waste in the first place," she concluded.
This week saw the implementation of the EU Landfill Directive which forces businesses to take more responsibility for the waste that they generate.
