Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) prepared to take on employees to work from home give themselves more recruitment options, according to one expert.

Nesta Holden, a spokesperson for the National Group on Homeworking, said: "It is well established and commonly accepted that productivity is higher among homeworkers."

She added that for many people who need to address issues such as childcare, working from home offers more flexibility.

However, she warned that although SMEs are offered more choice and flexibility by these workers some employees often find steadier employment to be more beneficial.

"Many people go into [homeworking] but they find that often the flexibility is all on the side of the employer - particularly with manufacturing or packing work," she concluded.

Recent figures by the Home Business Alliance found that there was a strong connection between self-employment and homeworking despite public tendency to want to separate working life from home life.
