Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are just as likely to fall victim to email phishing scams as larger companies according to one expert.
According to Equifax, a credit management and data services company, all sizes of business are open to identity theft and credit fraud through internet scams.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director for Equifax, said: "There's no doubt that corporates whether they be small businesses or large businesses are suffering from attempted stealing of identity."
He added that phishing was just as likely to target SMEs as it was larger companies and individuals but that smaller businesses may find that they do not have the same level of security in place.
"One could argue that you'd probably be more open to doing that if you're running a small business trying to answer these things quickly than you would do in a larger business where you might have more governance," he concluded.
A recent study from ClickZ.com, an internet news website, found that 44 per cent of online banking customers use the same password for a number of different services putting them at significant risk of fraud.
