SMEs are still in a state of confusion over European regulations that apply to the disposal of old electrical equipment, a new survey shows.
The Poll, conducted by Dell and the Federation of Small Businesses (FPB), shows that while 81 per cent of respondents are aware of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, almost a quarter (22.5 per cent) do not know if it affects them.
It also found that 40 per cent of enterprises recycle IT equipment through a third-party organisation, but others use alternative disposal methods including storing items indefinitely, IT Pro reports.
John Holbrow, FSB Environment chairman, said: "There is still work to be done by the government and vendors in educating businesses about IT equipment disposal responsibilities."
Meanwhile, the Carbon Trust has joined forces with the British Computer Society to produce a simulation tool which aims to allow businesses to understand the energy of any data centre they might use.
