Employers are finding it tough to appoint people with the skills they need, according to one expert.

It might interest business insurance customers to know that John Dunsmure, managing director for the British Chambers of Commerce, believes that the push to send youngsters to university means that the workforce is lacking the skills prized by many smaller firms.

He said: "We've said to a lot of people, don't even go to university, just go straight into business."

This can help people acquire the knowledge needed to set up their own firm, or simply become a valuable member of a business's staff, Mr Dunsmure added.

Despite rising unemployment, there are not enough people with the correct aptitudes to fill certain roles, he stated.

Last week, the Federation of Small Businesses called on the government to recognise and formally accredit training schemes offered by smaller firms.

According to the body, such companies provide a vital service in developing the nation's employees.ADNFCR-873-ID-18900103-ADNFCR
