Some SMEs can show a particular unwillingness to employ disabled people, according to one industry body.

Phil Friend, director and co-founder of Minty & Friend, said that big organisations that had the resources were more switched on to the issue of employing people with disabilities.

But, he said: "The real challenge is the small and medium enterprises, because they don't have the same resources, they don't have the time to spend."

Mr Friend expressed concerns that some people working in human resources wanted "an easy time" and that, the fact that disabled people sometimes needed adjustments to be made, could be seen as a problem.

However, he added that SMEs had a good track record in keeping on people who had become disabled while working.

Research carried out by Leonard Cheshire and easyJet estimated that there are around seven million people of working age in the UK who have a long-term disability.

It also revealed that of these seven million around 50 per cent of them were unemployed.
