Postal strikes can have a significant impact on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), according to one expert.

A spokeswoman for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said this week that postal strikes can often be a major problem for SMEs - as other postal providers do not cater for their needs.

Belinda Webb of the FSB said: "The FSB have advised all small businesses to be aware of the dates of the postal strike so they can make arrangements to send mail earlier."

She added that larger firms can also be affected by postal strikes but that often it is the smaller entrepreneur that can be hardest hit.

"A cheque delayed in the post can mean the difference between life and death for a small business … with such large numbers of [SMEs] relying on the postal service, any strike can be devastating," she concluded.

The FSB was formed in 1974 and is now the largest group offering protection to SMEs in the UK with over 205,000 members and 230 branches.
