Owners of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) should be aware of one expert's claims that digital content insurance (DCI) is yet to become fully functional.

Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) said yesterday that DCI was still very new to the insurance industry and that companies should consider the risks.

It has emerged that some firms are already offering DCI, which could prove useful for SMEs - however Mr Trudgill stated that the industry is still looking at the best way to offer cover.

"The industry is talking about: 'how can we do it' and the brokers are pushing the insurers to get the cover as soon as possible." he said.

He added that at the moment insurers were still attempting to figure out how claims occur and how to protect against them cost-efficiently.

"[Insurers] don't necessarily want to add it automatically if it's going to put the price up," he concluded.

Biba is an independent insurance body that represents insurance brokers, intermediaries and consumers across the UK.
