The recruitment process for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) has changed dramatically due to the internet, according to one expert.

A spokesperson for the Association of Professional Recruitment Consultants (APRC) said that the recruitment industry is now so reliant on the industry it is "strangling them".

Peter Clayton, chief executive of the APRC, said: "People post their CV on jobs boards and 09:00 BST the following morning they have got seven or eight agencies or companies contacting them."

He added that traditional advertising in newspapers and magazines meant that the timeframe used to be quite slower but now it can be possible for good candidates to can get an interview more quickly.

"You can put your CV on at 22:00 BST that night before you go to bed and have an interview by lunchtime the following day."

Research conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development last year revealed that 71 per cent of SMEs using online recruitment said they had done so to reduce costs.
