Employees at small firms are more likely to feel that they have played a part in the organisation's success, one expert has claimed.
Professor Ronald McQuaid, a director of the Employment Research Institute at Napier University explained that the very nature of SMEs leads people to feel that they have more of an input into the way the company operates.
He said: "Employees may feel that they are making a real contribution to the success of the organisation, in large firm they are small cog in large machine and can relate their own efforts to results for the firm."
The Professor added that the small nature of the workforce helps people bond and this leads to an "all of us together" attitude which makes them keen to unite against competing firms.
His comments come after the Sunday Times 100 Best SMEs to Work for 2008 list indicated that people who work for such firms feel happier than their counterparts at larger firms.
