Employees of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) do not need to be experts in IT, according to one expert.

A basic knowledge of four of the major software packages should be enough to ensure that candidates in most roles can work effectively.

Adam Wayland, editor of SmallBusiness.co.uk, said that although it is important for SMEs to give good IT training to its employees they should not be tempted to go over the top.

"To a certain extent, you need to be able to use the software that you come across in your day-to-day employment and you need to be able to do that well," he said.

"If people can use those big four programmes - the word processing programme and the spreadsheet programme that everyone uses - then it can benefit the candidate."

A recent survey from the Small Business Research Trust showed that 35 per cent of SMEs had witnessed growth in the first quarter of 2007, while 12 per cent grew in employment.
