SMBs unsure how to cut energy costs

Three out of four small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) feel that there is nothing they can do to reduce their energy costs, according to a survey.

The Morning Advertiser reports that energy now accounts for around ten per cent of overheads for businesses and government estimates suggest around £12 billion worth of energy is wasted each year.

Conducted by MORI and on behalf of British Gas Business (BGB), the survey found that 71 per cent of SMBs believed they would be unable to save energy in the workplace.

BGB head of marketing Simon Stenning said that by adopting simple low-cost measures to reduce energy use SMBs could save around 20 per cent on their average annual bill.

It was also revealed that 59 per cent of managers admitted to being more energy conscious at home than they are at work.

Energy Business Review reported this week that BGB has been accused by competitors of using aggressive sales campaign and unfair tactics that prevented SMBs from switching energy suppliers.
