It is the responsibility of small business owners to make sure that their staff are not involved in any fraudulent practices, one expert has claimed.

Danny Harrison, a fraud expert from CPP, explained that small retailers should take every step possible to clamp down on illegal activities.

He said: "I think one of the biggest things they can do is understand [the threat] and to vet employees.

"In the past, this is where we have seen cards that have been skimmed and there has been some involvement with staff within the retail industry."

Mr Harrison added that, in order to do this, retailers should put in place regular checks and vet their staff thoroughly prior to appointment.

Research carried out by CPP in February of this year found that London is the worst location for credit and debit card fraud.

It found that 28 per cent of people living in the city have been a victim of credit card fraud.
