Small firms are often "unaware" of the risks that events such as floods and terrorist attacks can have on their operations.
A spokesperson for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), explained that some companies might be put off by the cost of addressing the issue, while others might simply not have the time.
However, he believes it is vital that firms take steps to safeguard against unexpected events.
"The FSB would urge all small businesses to do what they can to protect their business and help it recover, especially in the current economic climate," the representative stated.
His comments come after research conducted by YouGov and SunGuard found that one third of managers are taking steps to ensure the smooth running of their company during disruption.
It also revealed that 40 per cent of firms would suffer total or severe impairment to businesses operations in the event of an IT failure.
