Small firms should be selective about what they put on their website, according to one expert.

It might interest retail insurance customers to know that Thomas Herbert, product management at web service firm Hostway, believes some businesses are wasting money on things they do not need.

He said: "If you are a small retailer and you don’t have enough money to put in to buying a big office server network, then you've got to be very selective of what you're going to be showing."

This means limiting the number of videos on the website and making sure such media is as low as quality as possible, he added.

Firms should also look to provide an alternative such as a download option, Mr Herbert stated.

A study by Verdict research shows that UK shoppers are set to spend more on Christmas this year than they did in 2008.

It predicts that a total of £82.3 billion will be spent in the run up to the festive period.ADNFCR-873-ID-18915500-ADNFCR
