Small firms are saving around £58 million a year by introducing green measures, it has been claimed.
According to government research, the savings have been made by firms utilising the NetRegs website.
The state-backed service offers environmental advice for free and aims to help boost understanding of the law and offer a competitive edge.
Figures show that firms which logon to the site at least once a week save an average of £5,296.
John Holbrow, chairman of the environment and energy policy unit at the Federation of Small Businesses said: "Environmental awareness should be a top priority for small businesses to help them not only to save costs but also to improve their competitive edge."
Recently, the government announced a scheme which will match funds that small firms give to support community groups.
The Grassroots Grant scheme will help groups with an annual income of less than £20,000, with the government promising to match donations from small companies.
