Smaller business insurance holders are struggling to make the most of the training support available to them, an expert asserts.

Will Cookson, head of skills at Working Link, claims that the current economic climate is leading companies to focus on the present and leading them to ignore potential future issues.

He states that larger business insurance holders have a better idea of programmes such as apprenticeships which are nationally advertised.

There is a great level of difference between employers in the extent to which they take advantage of skills development initiatives, he asserts.

Mr Cookson says: "What needs to happen is that the services need to be marketed directly at those small employers. This is being done through training providers, through colleges - they are approaching them."

Recent figures published by the British Chambers of Commerce reveal that employers are facing financial pressures, creating a need for steps combating these.

David Kern, the organisation's chief economist, claims that temporary measures such as wage subsidies should receive serious consideration.ADNFCR-873-ID-19129801-ADNFCR
