Small firms still need to more to tackle climate change, one expert has claimed.
John Treble, managing director of the Green Consultancy, explained that while firms are aware of the risks of climate change, few seem to be doing anything about.
He said: "When ...we do surveys to identify the opportunities for reducing carbon consumption, it is certainly true to say that the percentage of what we recommend ...that is implemented is nowhere near enough.
"Yes I would agree that that needs to be given much higher priority."
He added that by adopting green measures, some firms could make massive savings.
In certain industries, energy expenditure accounts for 20 per cent of turnover, so any environmentally-friendly steps they undertake could cut costs dramatically.
His comments follow research by the Johnson Controls Energy Efficiency Indicator survey that shows 72 per cent of companies in the USA are paying more attention to matters of energy efficiency than ever before.
