Small firms must be recognised for the efforts they make in training workers, according to one industry body.
It might interest business insurance customers to know that the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) believes that efforts by its members to education their workforce are being ignored.
Research by the body indicates that 70 per cent of respondents have trained workers through the "learning by doing" method, while around half have used experienced staff to pass on skills.
John Walker, FSB national policy chairman, called for such schemes to be officially accredited.
He said: "The role small businesses play in this area of training the UK's workforce should be properly acknowledged."
The government should also back firms to help them in their efforts to improve workers' skills, he added.
Yesterday, the British Chambers of Commerce called for tax cuts in the forthcoming pre-budget report.
According to the body, the government must take steps to help businesses.
