Small firms are increasingly turning to carbon offsetting, one expert has claimed.

John Buckley, founder of Carbon Footprint, explained that as people are increasingly concerned about the state of the environment, firms which go green might find they have an edge over their rivals.

He said: "Businesses are starting to offset more and more as well - we're getting a lot of enquiries all the time from companies wanting to reduce their emissions or offset them."

Mr Buckley added that tree plating is a very popular method of offsetting as many people already understand the mechanism by which trees grow and take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

However, a windfarm scheme based in India is also increasingly popular among those looking to counterbalance their emissions, he concluded.

According to the Department for Environment, food and Rural Affairs, carbon offsetting is a way of compensating for emission produce with an equivalent carbon dioxide saving.
