Small business insurance holders often neglect to update their IT equipment until their existing hardware breaks down, it has been claimed.
Ganesh Selvarajah, adviser at Business Link, suggested that small business insurance customers tend to fail to conduct regular system reviews which would identify when upgrades are needed.
He explained: "The equipment [is updated] usually only when there's been a system failure or their applications are getting very resource hungry and therefore the hardware can't cope."
Mr Selvarajah added that many small business insurance holders do not make use of advanced email services and do not have access to smartphones such as BlackBerrys.
A recent study from Forrester Research predicted that the global market from IT goods and services for firms and governments will decline by three per cent over 2009 to a value of $1.66 trillion (£1.16 trillion).
It also noted that there was an eight per cent increase in spending on IT during 2008.
