Parties provide small business insurance customers with a good opportunity to network, according to experts.

Corinne Mills, human resources manager at careers website Monster, says business insurance customers should go to any party they are invited to, including customers' or suppliers' bashes.

"Make sure that you talk to people perhaps you haven't spoken to before," Ms Mills advises, commenting that business insurance customers may need to "sow some seeds" because next year they may want to "pull some favours in".

She asserts that enterprises need to make sure they have strong relationships in place and that Christmas parties are an ideal time to forge those ties ahead of a "rocky year" in 2009.

The British Greyhound Racing Board found that 43 per cent of workers hate having to socialise with people they do not have anything in common with.

In a study on work Christmas parties, they discovered that over a third of people find them boring and 28 per cent feel out of place.
