Smaller retailers who cannot afford to sell products at competitive prices can do a number of things to make them stand out from larger companies, it has been suggested.
Spokesperson for the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) Shane Brennan said although some small retail outlets are finding it harder to compete, they can differentiate themselves by staying close to the needs of local communities and offering extra services such as home delivery and paper rounds.
In addition, sourcing goods locally may also help them to establish an individual identity from that of major supermarkets.
"Small businesses are about putting themselves in places where people live," Mr Brennan continued.
"They can provide services that national retailers don't provide
it's really about providing a plank of strength and being close to the communities."
ACS is the retail trade association for the UK's convenience store industry and represents more than 32,500 shops.
