Licensed premises which show Sky have to sell around 25,000 extra pints during the football season in order to cover the cost, it has been claimed.
In news which might be of interest to pub insurance customers, a study by the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR), revealed landlords now pay an average of £15,000 a year for a subscription.
A survey by the body found that 42 per cent of its members are happy with the service provided by the broadcaster.
Nick Bish, ALMR chief executive, said: "Sky has exploited its monopoly position in the commercial sector to impose enormous price increases on pubs."
However, pub insurance customers might also be interested to know Sky has refuted these claims.
According to the firm, the average cost of a subscription is only £5,400 a year and ALMR members pay more as they tend to have larger sites and could be in areas with a higher rateable value.
In news also related to pub insurance, it was recently reported that bars in Sunderland are trying out a new for of plastic drinks container which could replace glasses.
