High tech websites are often unnecessary for small and medium-sized businesses, according to one expert.
A spokesman for Smallbusiness.co.uk said today that although it was important for SMEs to have their contact details online it was often only a basic presence that was required.
Adam Wayland, editor of the website, said: "I dont think every small business needs a website that is totally interactive and using Flash and using very high-tech programs, but I do think it's important for small businesses to have a web presence."
He said that businesses who get enough business from word of mouth or other traders may even find that a website creates too much demand.
"Its about getting the message out there and making it as easy as possible for people with very little technical knowledge to get something up and running," he concluded.
A recent survey by ukonline.net found that 37 per cent of SMEs with online presence also admit to using a regular internet service as opposed to a business package.
