New research has suggested that retail insurance holders could benefit from playing music in their stores.

A survey carried out by business resource MusicWorks found that more than one-quarter of consumers would pay five per cent more in shops if music was being played by a retail insurance customer.

Furthermore, 84 per cent of shoppers said they like to hear music being played in an outlet, with 72 per cent of these thinking it improved the retail insurance holder's image.

The study also revealed half of consumers believe having songs playing is good for a company's business, while 60 per cent of workers claim it improves morale.

A spokesperson for MusicWorks commented: "The vast majority of consumers and employees like hearing music because it helps shift their emotional state to take best advantage of the respective environment."

Previous research from the organisation found that one in three drinkers will pay five per cent more for a tipple if music is played in a pub.
