Scotland's retail insurance holders experienced a sales increase in June, new figures have shown.

The Scottish Retail Consortium's (SRC's) Retail Sales Monitor June 2009 revealed that like-for-like sales increased by 2.2 per cent last month when compared to the same period in 2008.

Furthermore, retail insurance customers saw total sales rise by 6.6 per cent in June on last year's levels.

The group pointed out that the new figures follow May's decline, which was the worst reported by retail insurance holders since August 2000.

Richard Dodd, SRC head of media, explained: "On sunny days people bought summer food, including salads, ice cream and barbecue meat, and the good weather combined with clearance discounts to help clothing sales."

However, he also said that Scottish consumers are holding back on their spending on expensive non-essential items, due to worries about their employment and personal finances.

This month, the British Retail Consortium revealed that retail insurance holders in central London saw like-for-like sales increase by 4.7 per cent in June.
