Joining the fight against climate change could also help SMEs save money, according to Carbon Clear.
Mark Chadwick, chief executive officer, of the carbon management company, said: "As we talk to them [SMEs] about the issues, they will often look to work out what they can do within their organisations to reduce emissions - and save money in doing so."
He added that in future SMEs could expect enquiries from clients about their carbon footprint and that there was "a real value" in having a "robust answer".
Mr Chadwick even said that this could help attract new business.
The Carbon Trust says that UK businesses could save £1.4 billion in 2008 by introducing energy-efficient measures.
It suggests replacing tungsten light bulbs with compact florescent lamps, a move it says could save 75 per cent of energy used for lighting.
Other potential money saving measures include switching off PCs overnight and lowering thermostats by one degree.
