Workers seem set to take more businesses risks as the economic downturn worsens, new research indicates.

A study by consultants Common Purpose found that more than half of working adults already consider themselves to be risk-takers in the workplace.

It also reveals that 43 per cent of people think that take more risks will be important in helping their organisation survive a recession.

Julia Middleton, chief executive of Common Purpose, said: "An economic downturn is not the time to shy away from risks. Leaders need to be brave and bold, and to look in new places to capture the opportunities for growth and innovation."

Ms Middleton suggested that managers from the public, private and voluntary sectors should join forces and use their collective experience to help generate ideas.

Recently, Richard Lambert, director-general of the Confederation of British Industry, predicted that while the UK should avoid a recession, companies will need to avoid talking themselves into "unnecessary trouble".
