Easily-identifiable and standardised recycling information will be introduced onto packaging to improve national waste reduction targets early next year.
Retail organisations British Retail Consortium (BRC) and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) have begun a consultation with government, local authorities, manufacturers and retailers with the aim of achieving widespread adoption.
The BRC said that retailers were taking up the initiative and its proposed labelling was divided into three categories, from widely recycled to not currently recycled, based on a local authority's current policies.
Director General Kevin Hawkins said: "Retailers plan to have the new logo in use early in the new year.
"Retailers recognise they are uniquely placed to change customers' behaviour and help the government achieve its waste reduction targets."
A membership organisation, the BRC campaigns on behalf of retailers and aims to improve public perception of the industry.
