Retailers will continue to struggle in the short term, according to one expert.
David Kern, economic advisor at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), explained that as the rest of the economy is weak, people have little money to spare.
"We are in this weak situation that will stay for some time, we don't expect any quick recovery," he said.
However, although the UK is "probably" experiencing a recession already, he is not expecting there to be "a collapse" in the UK economy.
It is important that the situation is not exaggerated and made worse, he added.
According to a report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the UK's economy will shrink by 0.3 per cent in the third quarter of this year and 0.4 per cent during the following three months.
If true, the UK would then be in a recession, which is commonly defined as two successive quarters of negative growth.
