The new Scores on the Doors awards scheme highlighting the health inspection histories of food outlets has angered some businesses.

According to the Newbury Weekly News, the rating system - which takes food hygiene and safety standards into account - has placed a number of snack bars above Michelin-Star restaurants.

Marwan Hemchaoui, owner of the Square Bar & Bistro in Newbury which received one star, said that inspectors had requested the establishment make "minor changes", the news provider reports.

"From the star rating anyone would think we had rats or disease in the kitchen," he remarked.

However, local sandwich bar Munchies was given a five-star rating, according to the newspaper.

Scores on the Doors is intended to provide information about the hygiene ratings given by local authorities to businesses serving food.

The public are able to obtain ratings on some 57,891 businesses, including restaurants, pubs, clubs and take-aways.
