The gains experienced by retail insurance customers who survive the ongoing recession will be limited, it has been claimed.

A spokesman for the British Retail Consortium admitted that shops and stores will see some short-term benefits if their rivals are forced out of business by the harsh economic climate.

However, he added that the same conditions which pushed competitors out of the market will have an impact on retail insurance holders.

The representative commented: "Any gains are likely to be outweighed by the harm everyone suffers in a recession."

Retail insurance customers must take steps to monitor and adapt to changes in customer demand by identifying opportunities to fill gaps in the market, he explained.

In addition, the spokesman pointed out that new retail insurance holders will enter the sector as others leave and create new competition for any survivors.

A recent study by Verdict Research claimed that retailers will be able to capitalise on a total of £3.9 billion in surpluses will be created by firms leaving the sector.
